Her feelings for John Gilbert and her efforts to help him showed her generosity and loving nature, and little Leatrice had good reason to adore her.

I always thought Marlene's best works were in her later career. Witness for the Prosecution and Judgment at Nuremburg particularly, were tremendous performances. And, as you say, I just love Madaline Kahn's Marlene spoof -- that's a real tribute to a real star.ClassicBeckyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03591715859057540467noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8509825018139758536.post-74470617148412724282011-02-07T20:11:46.283-08:002011-02-07T20:11:46.283-08:00When I was younger I was dazzled by Dietrich's...When I was younger I was dazzled by Dietrich's enigmatic beauty - what I wouldn't have given to look like that & have such presence...later I followed her films and admired her long, long career - peppered with great classic films. Dietrich's work on behalf of Allied forces during WWII was once very well known...as doc and John mentioned, she was ardently anti-Nazi. I became aware of her relationship with Leatrice Gilbert Fountain about a year ago through Leatrice's book. When I spoke with Leatrice she confirmed what she had written and still voiced much admiration for the actress. In my view, Marlene Dietrich is one of the few true film legends. Unique. I only watched her last week in A FOREIGN AFFAIR, her first of two films she made with Billy Wilder. She is actually the best thing in the film, for me, one of Wilder's lesser films. Ironically, her role is that of a Nazi sympathizer.Johnhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01808503055317962289noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8509825018139758536.post-50166074029757006332011-02-07T08:02:02.507-08:002011-02-07T08:02:02.507-08:00That was a great post, Eve, about a true star. I never found her to be particularly beautiful, probably because I haven't studied her early work, but she was glamorous in every way. The photo you posted from Gigolo shows how good she looked at 77 years old!
She inspired others as seen by Madeline Kahn's character in Blazing Saddles! It may be that there was more a sense of community in Hollywood in those days. Today it seems most celebs have a charity, but this is now considered a PR necessity. The Lady Evehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11963115499930520653noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8509825018139758536.post-59060177378518056462011-02-06T12:31:16.273-08:002011-02-06T12:31:16.273-08:00The generosity displayed so many of the stars of t...The generosity displayed so many of the stars of that era is remarkable. Marion Davies used much of the money she made to help ill and needy children in Los Angeles; near the end of her life, she helped establish a children's wing at the UCLA medical center. Actresses such as Jean Harlow and Carole Lombard were renowned in the film community for aiding crew members who were down on their luck through no fault of their own.VP81955https://www.blogger.com/profile/11792390726196611188noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8509825018139758536.post-5291951946974198362011-02-06T10:59:33.472-08:002011-02-06T10:59:33.472-08:00Wow!
